How we evaluate, score, and rank every electrolyte supplement — explained in full.
Every product we review receives a composite score out of 10, calculated as a weighted average of four independent evaluation pillars. This system is designed to reward genuinely superior formulas while penalizing products that rely on marketing over substance.
Scores are not rounded or adjusted for "feel." A product that scores 7.483 is reported as 7.5. We do not inflate ratings to maintain advertiser relationships, because we do not have advertiser relationships.
Each pillar is scored independently on a 1-to-10 scale, then combined using the weights below to produce the final composite score.
We evaluate mineral sourcing (unrefined vs. synthetic), the breadth of the electrolyte profile (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and trace minerals), sugar content, and the absence of artificial additives, dyes, and fillers. Products using unrefined sources such as Sel Gris or deep-sea mineral complexes score higher than those relying on isolated, lab-synthesized compounds.
We calculate the cost-per-serving at full retail price and at the lowest available subscription tier. We then assess "mineral density per dollar" — how many milligrams of bioavailable electrolytes you receive for each cent spent. Bulk discounts and free shipping offers are factored in, but temporary promotional pricing is excluded.
A panel of three testers evaluates each flavor on a blind basis, scoring for palatability, aftertaste, and mixability. We test in both cold water (40°F) and room temperature. Products that clump, leave gritty residue, or have an overpowering artificial aftertaste are penalized. Portability and packaging convenience are also assessed.
We investigate whether the manufacturer discloses full ingredient origins, provides third-party lab test results (such as NSF or Informed-Sport certification), and makes verifiable claims. Proprietary blends that hide individual dosages are penalized. Brands with published advisory boards or peer-reviewed research references receive credit.
What our numerical scores translate to in plain language:
We re-evaluate our top-rated products every six months or immediately when a manufacturer changes its formula, pricing structure, or certification status. Every review displays its "Last Updated" date.
No manufacturer has editorial input at any stage. Our affiliate revenue is generated after ratings are published and has no bearing on scoring. For full details on how we fund our operations, see our About page or our Affiliate Disclosure in the footer.
